Campus SuperStar takes two

After a 15 minute judging on Sunday night Bryan Matechen and Khrista White, Point Park University Students, will be two of the 11 to go on to compete in the Campus SuperStar final on April 6 at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.
There were 28 other contestants at the semi-finals, held at the William Pitt Union on the University of Pittsburgh campus; six of the contestants competing were from Point Park University.
The competition started in November just before Thanksgiving break. Directors involved with Campus SuperStar set up tables outside of the JVH auditorium and encouraged any passersby who could sing to audition.
"I was walking down the hall and the woman that runs it said 'do you sing'. I said yes. I went in and sang and got a call a week later that I was in the semi finals," Maren Fischer, freshman musical theater major, said.
Of the 130 people who auditioned to be part of Campus SuperStar, final contestants were chosen from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University and Point Park.
As contestants trickled into the auditorium on the night of the contest, an empty stage stared back at them. The singers gathered to the left of the stage as the organizers explained what order the performances would be in and what criteria the contest was judged upon.
The minutes ticked by and slowly parents and other relatives of the contestants wandered into the room and sat down. Just before the show began students from each school joined the audience in support of the contestants from each school.
Host David Johnson from WPXI took the stage and thanked Hillel, the Foundation for Jewish campus life, for sponsoring and organizing the program. This is Hillel's second year sponsoring the event. Following this introduction the first performer of the night was introduced.
Sam Doblick, sophomore musical theatre major at Point Park, took the stage to sing "At Last," a song that has been performed by women such as Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.
