Ravenstahl unprepared for repercussions from students over 'fair share' tax proposal

Like most other college students in the Greater Pittsburgh area, (and, I'm sure, a majority of non-college persons) I am aware of the one percent tuition tax suggested by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl on college students. There are just two problems with this plan.

'Fat list' brings health concerns to light

Dear Editor, I am writing this in response to the recent article in The Globe (from Oct. 22, 2009) regarding a so-called "fat list" posted by COPA last year. The article described a posting in Lawrence Hall in spring 2008 which identified specific dance students who were asked to meet with a member of the faculty.

Lead singer leaving not always the end for band

After years of shows, recording sessions and tours, losing an important member, especially the lead singer, could jeopardize a band's future. One of the greatest rock 'n roll bands is about to say goodbye to one of their most prominent members. Aerosmith, the band that gave us nearly four decades of music to relish, is bidding lead singer Steven Tyler farewell.

Journalists should not invade privacy of anyone for publication

Everyone from celebrities to the most well-known journalists wants their privacy. But the present view that privacy is a right of an individual has only been around for little over 100 years. According to People magazine, Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie and co-star of the MTV reality series "The Simple Life," was recently granted a temporary order against two unnamed paparazzi, which ordered them to stay 100 yards away from her and her daughter and son.

Black Friday sales not excuse for bad behavior

I've never associated Black Friday with discounts or sales. My parents were never big shoppers, and they would refuse to leave the house on the day after Thanksgiving. I grew up thinking of Black Friday as the day that adults became preschoolers again - kicking and screaming as they transform into greedy little kids with the single thought in their minds being "I have to have that!" This year, Black Friday is particularly important to retailers.

Bands beware: KISS is back in rock music scene

They play with fire, they're loud and wear more makeup than your mother. After a break from their 35 years on the hard rock music scene, they're back! KISS is touring again, adding Pittsburgh to their list of tour stops. Their newly released album, "Sonic Boom" is the foundation of their tour this year.

Letter to the Editor

Ravenstahl's 'fair share' tax unfair

Dear Editor, My college days are over and I have no children. Consequently, I will not ever be personally affected by Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's proposed one percent college tuition tax, but I must decry its unfairness. Taxing college tuition will place an even-greater burden on struggling students and the families which want them to receive the best education they can afford.
